Children in the Middle Mediation

How Family Mediation Works

The Process

1. Individual MIAM (Mediation Information and Assessment Meeting)

Each of you attends your own private meeting with the mediator to explain your situation and to decide whether mediation is suitable for you.

2. Joint Family Mediation Sessions

You will meet together with your mediator to discuss the issues that matter to you. The mediator remains impartial and independent throughout the process.

3. Written Summary of Agreements

At the end, the mediator provides a summary of the points you’ve agreed on— ready for legal advice or conversion into a court order.

The Benefits of Family Mediation

  • Control: you decide the outcome, not a Judge.
  • Delay: the process is much quicker than court proceedings.
  • Lower cost: you avoid unnecessary legal costs.
  • Less stressful: you avoid the anxiety and stress of combative court proceedings.

Is Family Mediation Right for You?

Mediation is suitable for most separating couples, including those:

  • Getting divorced or dissolving a civil partnership.
  • Living apart but needing to agree on parenting and finances.
  • Who want to avoid escalating tensions through legal proceedings.

If there are concerns about safety, abuse, or coercion, we will discuss this at your MIAM and if necessary, signpost you to alternative support options.
