How and when to book a barrister

So, you’re involved in court proceedings, which are really stressful. Along with that you are involved in a court case about your child. These are probably one of the most stressful, and potentially distressing and upsetting, types of court cases there are.

Here at Children in the Middle®, we want to try to reduce your stress levels by explaining how to go about things.

So, you’ve decided you want to use a barrister by employing them directly and without a solicitor. You need to book a barrister. If you were instructing a solicitor, they would do it.

But the thing is, there’s no magic to it. No mystery. No secret code words you have to know. There’s no shaking of the trouser leg needed to be able to book a barrister. It’s all very straightforward and simple to do. You just have to be organised and pick up the phone yourself.

Usually courts book hearings at least two to three months in advance – although it does depend on the court hearing your case. Generally speaking, barristers’ diaries are also booked up a couple of months in advance.

When you receive your court date, from the court office, you need to book your barrister. Otherwise, if you leave it until the last minute, the chances are that the barrister you want to use will already be booked up. This will add to your stress levels and no one wants that.

If your hearing is at short notice, do still give us a ring. Barristers’ diaries can change at short notice (e.g. where the parties to a case reach an agreement at the last minute) and we may still be able to help you.

We’re available to give advice too, so please get in touch if you need further assistance.
