Domestic abuse is harmful to children of all ages, including very young children. This can be either through the child being the direct victim of the abuse but also if they witness or live in a home where a parent is being abusive to the other.
The harm to the child maybe direct physical, psychological or emotional harm. However, it may also be from where domestic abuse negatively impacts the parenting of one or both of their parents.
Historically the definition of domestic abuse was limited to violence. Nowadays, the types of behaviours defined as domestic abuse are much wider and include violence, threatening behaviour, controlling behaviour, coercive behaviour, economic abuse, psychological and emotional abuse.
