What does gaslighting mean?

The word ‘gaslighting’ is being used more frequently, but what does it actually mean?

Gaslighting is when an individual tries to convince someone else they’re wrong about something, even when they aren’t.

This can be harmless and is just an unwillingness to be proven wrong. It can feature in every type of human relationship.

However, in its extreme form, gaslighting is emotional abuse, as it can be a form of psychological manipulation, where an individual makes another person question their own memory, perception or judgment. In extreme cases, it can make the other person question their own sanity.

In intimate relationships, one partner may deliberately gaslight the other partner as a form of control.

For the person on the receiving end of gaslighting, it can impact significantly on their self-esteem, confidence and undermine their sense of self-belief.

In cases about the care of children, gaslighting can form part of the domestic abuse of one parent against the other. This can have an impact on the care arrangements for the children.
