In the depths of the Covid-19 pandemic, all court hearings had to be heard remotely. Most were by telephone, but some were by video conferencing. This meant the courts service had to quickly develop a way to use video conferencing for certain hearings.
There are still a range of video conferencing platforms that different courts will use – Microsoft Teams and Zoom being the favourites. The court has now developed its own Cloud Video Platform which is being rolled out across the country. Judges will decide which platform will be used for each case.
As a party to court proceedings, you need two devices to participate in a hearing via video conferencing. One to join the conference and the other to communicate with your lawyer.
The court and your legal representatives will explain how to join the hearing and how to set up your devices.
Once the video conference starts, it is a normal court hearing, with the Judge or Magistrates in charge and making the decisions. The normal court rules apply.
