The impact of COVID-19 on children’s mental health

A recent report by The Childhood Trust has found that the COVID-19 pandemic and ‘lockdown’ has caused an increase in children’s mental health problems.

COVID-19 has had a serious financial impact on certain parents. In particular, those in badly affected industries such as Hospitality and Aviation. These may well be families who were previously financially stable. However, COVID-19 has had a dramatic impact on their family finances.

The consequence for children, particularly those who are vulnerable, has, according to the report, been an increase in mental health problems. Those children are more likely to suffer from anxiety and depression due to social isolation and hunger.

During lockdown the sale of alcohol increased by 21%. This may have impacted the millions of children living with a parent who is drinking hazardously, or those children living in a domestically abusive household.

These effects have been heightened by most children not attending school and other services such as youth centres being closed. This means there is less outside help available to those children who need it.
